Literal quote from a research paper about Chinese Christian businessmen that have migrated to Europe and successfully set up shop:


"For rural-originated migrants who embrace a global hierarchy of places, the evangelical discursive distinction between the mundane and the transcendent spheres finds expression in their perceived opposition between the peripheral local and the modern global centre in the global market economy."


Interpretation: These businessmen are not intimidated by doing business in world-class cities (as in Rome and Paris which is the focus on the paper), even though they came from humble backgrounds.
